Wayan in the Veneto

Week 17

Nothing to do with the book whatsoever, but here’s a few pics of breweries near Venice, seen last week. The BEFeD brew pub chain has several outlets, this one being to the south-east of Palmanova – the Italian equivalent of Ludlow, both being slow food towns! Saw another BEFeD in Trieste. The beer delivery boat is particularly nice. Best beer on this trip was a huge bottle of what is apparently a seasonal ale, brewed at Le Baladin brewery (top fermented beers only) way out to the west in Piozzo, Piedmont (south of Turin). Called Wayan, after the brewer’s daughter, it is 5.8% strength, bottle conditioned and very complex – not surprising as it has 17 different ingredients. Finally in Trieste was the Excalibur brew pub, near the colossal cemetery in the east of the city. Note the louvre ventilation in the upper window. Sadly no time for a drink there, and indeed must get back to work as have a photo expedition in London and Essex to look forward to next week.
