The Brewers’ House, Brussels

Week 36

Getting ahead of myself as busy week next week, by looking back to last weekend (if you see what I mean) in Brussels, where there are no less than three brewery museums. The first, in the Grand Place, is the splendid Maison des Brasseurs, the HQ of their Brewers’ Guild, where great ceremonies take place during the Brussels Beer Weekend (around now). The facade is awash with beer-related imagery, including (I think) hops carved around the bases of the capitals. The museum is in the basement, and basically not a lot more than a room of interesting old kit (good copper), another room with new kit and a film (2011) with nice background to Belgian breweries, and of course a bar. It was a fine start to a brewery-themed weekend. More on Brussels breweries next time. Apart from these awaydays, progress on the book itself is good, with many more illustrations sorted out and even more words written in chapter 3, the main chronological chapter, without which we can go no further!
