Shopping at the museum

Week 69

Realised I hadn’t quite finished off the Hertford pics, so here’s what the Old Brewery now looks like, in its new role as a backdrop to Sainsbury’s. McMullen’s, of course, still brew in Hertford, but not in this brewhouse, which has been renovated as part of the redevelopment and now awaits new tenants, offices I guess. The tower looks very smart, and some of the smaller buildings should make very nice meeting rooms – OK, I know we’d all prefer an actual brewing brewery, but it is so much better than demolition. (Brackets – took me quite some time today to ascertain when the Boddington’s Strangeways Brewery chimney of 1881 had been demolished – to go by the web, one could be forgiven for thinking it was still with us, tho it’s not visible on google maps; the answer was 2010.) Anyway, back at Sainsbury’s, another planning requirement was that a brewery museum should be set up in the supermarket, and this has been done very nicely, in the former copper house. It is accessed through the cafe (there is a lift if you can’t hack the stairs), and looks to be popular. I’m sure more people now see and are more aware of the brewery than did before, when it was working. There are also mural panels all round the foyer, about McMullen’s and Hertford. Job well done I’d say. (And, for a change, no statue of a dray horse!) Meanwhile back at the captions, after three weeks or so of effort, I have completed 90 per cent of them, with about 30 to go. I am tempted to down the bottle of Sam Smiths Yorkshire Stingo (a headbanging 9 abv I think, but tastes lovely) that I’ve kept for celebrating completion tonight, even though it’s a bit early. Well, it’s a nice thought…..
